A most enjoyable tour of the gardens and indigenous plants of the French Riviera was completed at the beginning of May. The season was late this year and there where plenty of plant of interest in the gardens which would normally be over. Several exceptional wild plants were noted this year both on the alkaline slopes and also the acid soils in the surrounding hills. The tour is planned again for the Spring of 2009. Numbers are always limited so please register your interest early if you are thinking of joining this tour.

Chelsea 2008

Rosemary at the Plant School stand at Chelsea 2008

We shared a stand with Capital Gardens this year for the launch of The Plant School and it was a delight to see so many of you and to meet several prospective students for the next academic year. This was a good opportunity to hear that The Plant School has been extremely well received. There was much interest in a school given over specifically to plants and their study which was very encouraging. The stand at the show was great fun to put on and it was wonderful to see all who came to visit us.

Chelsea Flower Show 2008 sees the launch of The Plant School, a new and innovative school offering courses and plant tours dedicated entirely to plants.

The courses will be run from a studio in Chelsea and will include visits to the plant collections at The Chelsea Physic Garden nearby and also The Royal Botanic Garden, Kew.

The Director of Courses is Rosemary Campbell-Preston B.Sc (Hons.) who comes from a famous gardening family, Waterers. She has a degree in Plant Sciences from Wye College and for the last seven years has been a Course Director at the English Gardening School.

Plant enthusiasts including Roy Lancaster and Carol Klein will form part of the teaching team. Courses start in September, run for three terms and finish at the end of June. Students need no prior formal training but must have an interest in plants.

Courses are structured to provide an understanding of how plants grow, the conditions found in their natural habit and how they interact with their surroundings. Students who have successfully completed the courses can pursue a variety of interests and careers in the field s of garden design, plant photography and media. They will be given priority for places on the exclusive plant tours. Recent tours have been to the Cape Floral Kingdom, South Africa and the Riviera, South of France.

Rosemary Campbell-Preston B.Sc.(Hons.) says, "I am really excited about this new venture and am looking forward to sharing my love of plants with The Plant School students".

The Plant School will be at Stand Eastern Avenue 72 (EA72) where Rosemary will be at the show on the Stand.

Gillian Foster prints available at our Chelsea stand

"Pelargonium" - Gillian Foster

Gillian Foster trained as a botanical artist in London and graduated with distinction. Two of her paintings have been selected for inclusion in the Highgrove Florilegium presently being created under the aegis of the Prince of Wales Charitable foundation to celebrate and record in a permanent way the flora in the garden at Highgrove. The American Society of Botanical Artists has chosen Gillian's "Black Parrot" tulip watercolour to promote the current exhibition of these works at the New York School of Interior Design. She is a Royal Horticultural Society medallist and exhibits in London and Cape Town. Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Pittsburg, U.S.A. and by private collectors in Europe, South Africa and the U.S.A.

Her keen interest in plants extends from those in her Northamptonshire garden to the abundant flora of the Cape, South Africa. Combining careful observation of plants and their habit with the technical and artistic skills required, she is able to capture both botanical accuracy and beauty.

Each print is signed and numbered from the edition of just 95 copies by the artist. Printed on soft textured 315 gsm watercolour paper. Supplied with a guarantee certificate and mounted in deep bevel antique white board.
